Research activitiesrange from nanoscale to pilot scale and focus on food, energy,water, and health systems.Some of the major responsibilities of the HABB1 Building Managerinclude performing preventive maintenance of pilot plant/laboratoryspecific systems, such as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing;managing shared equipment, e.g., fume hoods and autoclaves;maintaining service records and scheduling maintenance withequipment vendors as needed; providing technical assistance tofaculty and students conducting projects in pilot labs; interfacingand working with VT Facilities to maintain building functions;interacting with external entities, e.g., companies and agencieswith interest in using pilot facilities; and supporting developmentof collaborations with non-VT users. Willingness to participate infurther training to improve skills and understanding of newtechnologies is a plus.Required QualificationsB.S. degree in Agricultural Engineering, Biological SystemsEngineering, Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, MechanicalEngineering, Biotechnology, or related technical field andsignificant professional experience or training directly related tothe position; or M.S. degree in a field listed above. Experiencewith the operation, repair, and maintenance of laboratory andbuilding system equipment; knowledge of laboratory safety.Preferred QualificationsWorking knowledge of and experience with mechanical, electrical(both low and high voltage), and plumbing concepts and systems;Working knowledge of pilot equipment; Experience working withnon-university clients and collaborators, e.g., industry andgovernment; Understanding the operations of commercial andresidential refrigeration systems; Diagnosing malfunctions anddefects in equipment, repair skills for what is appropriate toaccomplish in-house; Reading blueprints, equipment specifications,and electrical and electronic schematics; Operating tools, repairequipment, gauges and other testing equipment particularly forrefrigeration systems; Possess strong analytical, problem solvingand organizational skills, show the ability to work bothindependently and in teams as needed. Demonstrate good math,communication and basic computer skills.
