Browns depth chart 2019: Cleveland’s roster moves signal shift to win-now mode

By on August 16, 2020

first_imgMORE CLEVELAND BROWNS:Mayfield’s ranking among QBs | Kitchens’ place among coachesThe difference in talent is dramatic, and now the Browns must play with expectations. As Cleveland marches toward the regular season, here is a breakdown of its projected two-deep depth chart on offense and defense.Browns depth chart: OffensePos.StarterBackupQBBaker MayfieldDrew StantonRBNick ChubbKareem Hunt*WROdell Beckham Jr.*Jaelen Strong*WRJarvis LandryDamion RatleyWRRashard HigginsAntonio CallawayTEDavid NjokuSeth DeValveLTGreg RobinsonDesmond HarrisonLGJoel BitonioDrew Forbes*CJC TretterEric Kush*RGAustin CorbettBryan Witzmann*RTChris HubbardKendall Lamm**New to Browns in 2019Running backChubb was impressive as a rookie with 996 yards and eight TDs on 5.2 yards per carry. That included an average of 7.1 yards per carry in the fourth quarter. The timeshare between Chubb and Hunt in the second half of the season will be interesting to monitor given the difference in styles. In 2017, Hunt had 53 receptions for 455 yards and led the NFL in rushing with 1,327 yards as part of his breakout season. He is on a one-year deal, so the second half of the season must come with zero distractions. That leaves Duke Johnson, a veteran who averaged 864 yards from scrimmage over the last four seasons with the Browns, in limbo.Kitchens has insisted throughout the offseason Johnson will be key contributor, but the fact that Johnson requested a trade leaves doubts about his future in Cleveland. No NFL team has created more offseason buzz in 2019 than the Browns. Cleveland, which finished 0-16 in 2017, is now the preseason favorite to win the AFC North because general manager John Dorsey continues to hoard Pro Bowl talent to improve a roster around franchise quarterback Baker Mayfield and first-year coach Freddie Kitchens. The Browns took that aggression to the next level in March, when they traded for megastar Odell Beckham Jr. Cleveland also added running back Kareem Hunt, who will start the season with an eight-game suspension, via free agency. An all of that was before the 2019 NFL Draft. Emmanuel Ogbah was traded to the Chiefs, but the Browns added Vernon in the Zeitler trade. Vernon averaged a touch more than seven sacks per season with the Giants and Dolphins. The Browns also brought in Richardson, who has played with three different teams over the last three seasons, on a three-year deal. It’s a talented front for defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.MORE: Will Gerald McCoy sign with Browns?LinebackerJamie Colins returned to the Patriots, and this was a position the Browns were expected to address more via free agency. They will stick with Avery, Schobert and Kirksey at the starting positions. Adarius Taylor, who enjoyed a breakout season with 60 tackles for Tampa Bay last season, was the free-agency add. BYU’s Sione Takitake is a third-round pick who could work into the rotation early.Cleveland also drafted Alabama’s Mack Wilson in the fifth round, and he is a player who could develop into a starter down the line. Given that Schobert will be an unrestricted free agent in 2020, this is a big year for those rookies to prove themselves. Wide receiverBeckham joins former LSU teammate Jarvis Landry at receiver in Cleveland, which gives Mayfield two Pro Bowl receivers with which to work. Beckham, who was the prize in a trade that sent Jabrill Peppers to the Giants, led the NFL with 108.8 receiving yards per game as a rookie in 2014, and he gives Mayfield a go-to receiver.Beckham battled injuries and drama in New York over the last two seasons, and he comes to Cleveland in a prove-it spot in his career. Just watch the catch percentage. Beckham caught 390 of 622 targets with the Giants — a 62.8 catch percentage that should improve with Mayfield and the other targets the Browns have to offer.Landry, Higgins, Callaway and tight end David Njoku all had more than 500 yards receiving last season. Mayfield will spread the ball around to this group, but there are concerns about experience behind that core.DIAMOND: Bad start for OBJ in ClevelandOffensive lineMost of Cleveland’s offensive line remains intact, and the decision to re-sign Greg Robinson at left tackle shows confidence in that group. Kevin Zeitler was traded to the Giants as part of a deal that brought Olivier Vernon to the Browns. Austin Corbett, a second-round pick in 2018, is in the spotlight now. This group showed improvement last season. Mayfield took 25 sacks as a rookie, which was less than two per game in 13 starts. Cleveland also averaged 4.6 yards per rushing attempt. The Browns added depth via free agency with Eric Kush, Bryan Witzmann and Kendall Lamm. Those three additions combined for 27 starts last season. Left guard Drew Forbes, a sixth-round pick out of Southeast Missouri State, has sleeper appeal. SecondaryDenzel Ward and Damarious Randall combined for seven interceptions and solidified two spots in the secondary last year. Ward, a 2018 first-round pick, did suffer two concussions, and that will need to be monitored.Cleveland addressed the other cornerback in the draft with second-round pick Greedy Williams, a cover corner from LSU who slipped down the board in part because of concerns with his tackling.Morgan Burnett, Randall’s former teammate in Green Bay, will take over at the other safety spot. Burnett started in two games for the Steelers last season. Cleveland also drafted Sheldrick Redwine, a Miami safety, in the fourth round.last_img read more

Five keys to an 11 games ‘express’ League

By on May 14, 2020

first_imgOnce Health approve the return of League competition, the teams will face an unprecedented situation in history. Matches every three days from the same competition and resolution of it, after three months stopped, in just a month and a half of competition. There is not going to be time for the players and the teams to get in tune. Whoever does not start well, will be able to see all their chances of reaching their goals diminished. It will be a very strange situation for everyone. So, there are several factors that experts predict as relevant, once the atypical preseason that awaits them is completed, and La Liga is restarted with 11 weeks to play.1.- Physical preparation in the months of confinementThe level of physical preparation that each player has had in this confinement it will seem key in the first matches of competition. It is true that, first individually and then in groups, the players will carry out a mini preseason in the facilities of each club. However, the individual basis that each one brings from their time in confinement can be fundamental when starting the league express butt. “Each one’s level of preparation will be very important. Whoever has been able to maintain involvement in unusual conditions will have a lot of livestock“says Pako Ayestarán, former coach and fitness trainer of Valencia. Furthermore, the physical conditions in which each one has developed the confinement will have to do with how they return to the sports cities.”A player who lives in a chalet and has his space is not the same outdoors to work than someone else who lives in a small apartment with more restrictions, “says Carmelo del Pozo, sports director and physical trainer.2.- The youth hourAs it is an ‘express’ competition, which will last more or less like a World Cup, the first matches will have extreme relevance. In the first ten or 12 days of competition each team will have already played four games, more than a third of what remains until the end. And there young players always have a competitive advantage with older footballers. “The young player, often finer and more agile, the preseason has always started better and the seasons and the veteran always have a little more trouble starting. The Ferran, Joao Félix, Vinicius or Ansu may have an advantage in what remains of the League “, warns Alberto Escobar, coach Birmingham City assistant. Ayestarán, in addition, affects the recovery, more difficult for veterans, since it will be played with so little rest time between games. “The veteran clearly has a bigger problem with resilience. However, this is supplemented by more correct tactical behavior and greater effort, “he says. 3.- A ‘new’ LeagueFor the experts, it will be useless in this league final express, the moment of the teams when the competition was suspended, at the middle of March. “It is a new league where the past only counts to know the starting position of each team and the physical aspect is going to be as important as the psychological one. It will be a very short competition held in a very short time where a bad or good streak of results can lead to achieving or losing goals without correction margin“, highlights Carmelo del Pozo. Furthermore, heaccording to the five changes that FIFA wants to implement It will be another important aspect to manage to have a good League final. “The five changes will be important. A footballer who plays less than 60 minutes has a much faster recovery. Whoever is able to play that trick well will have a great advantage, “says Ayestarán.4.- Psychological and motivational aspectAlmost more important than tone physical that soccer players maintain is the psychological and motivational. On the one hand, playing behind closed doors continuously will be a factor that footballers are not used to. Further, footballers are people and they cannot abstract from what has happened and it could continue to happen while they are contesting a championship. “Everything goes through the minds of footballers and could influence the emotional aspect: the uncertainty, the contagions, the tests …“Ayestarán points out. In addition, the succession of matches in a few days (in seven weeks 11 league games will be played) can make Team dynamics, for better or for worse, are difficult to change. “There may be teams that have been down all season and win three games in seven days and are out of the drop. Or the other way around, teams that walked halfway through the table without problems and in a few days were in big trouble, “says Del Pozo.5.- Climatology and heatOne factor that should not be overlooked is that the 11 matches will be played, At first, at the end of June and throughout the month of July. This means that in many parts of Spain the thermometer can mark more than 30 degrees. LaLiga has not yet determined schedules although, as in the beginning of the leagues, it is normal to play at night. Still and with so few days of rest between games, heat acclimatization and stress management in these circumstances another key element for the last eleven games of the championship. “Keep in mind that the competition will be in the summer months. JPlaying in cities such as Valencia or Seville will continually be a handicap. How each staff handles that level of fatigue and recovery will also be important, “says Ayestarán.”It will be like a World CupIf there are finally concentrations, it will look even more like a World Cup. We in England will be less hot but it is true that in Spain if the heat pays hard it will be more complicated“, wields Escobar.last_img read more
