Mortal Kombat 11 Looks Bloody Hype

first_imgStay on target Joker and The Terminator Cross Over Into ‘Mortal Kombat 11’‘Mortal Kombat 11’ Kharacter Guide: Nightwolf Mortal Kombat 11 is koming basically when we thought it would, April 23, in line with the previous patterns of past NetherRealm games like Mortal Kombat and Injustice. However, for some reason Ed Boon and friends took their sweet time actually showing off this latest entry in the infamously gory, Congress-upsetting fighting game franchise. But no more! Mortal Kombat 11 has been revealed, and the upside of this waiting game is that now we don’t need to wait that much longer until we get to play it for ourselves.Mortal Kombat 11 was revealed at a weirdly extravagant live event. I guess because Mortal Kombat’s popularity does extend into mainstream. Plus, ever since covering players in digital blood in the 1990s the series has been all about kung-fu showmanship excess. Just listen to how much hip-hop is in the marketing now.Taking a break with the relatively more friendly superhero action of Injustice always allows the NetherRealm team to recharge the gore creativity in Mortal Kombat. I was just taken aback by how technically impressively MK11’s graphical rendering of the human body is, inside and out. New and returning characters demonstrated all sorts of horrifying Fatal Blows (replacing X-Ray Attacks as super moves) and game-ending fatalities.Faces get ripped off by skin and muscle layers independently. Baraka eats Brains. Heads get frozen and shattered. Skarlet pulls the blood out of her victim’s eyes. Newcomer Geras uses the sands of time to freeze foes in place and dismember them. Sonya Blade (now played by the… problematic Ronda Rousey) shoots people straight up into helicopter blades. It owns! It makes me appreciate Mortal Kombat as really the only Western fighting game that matters. As a fighting game Mortal Kombat 11 also continues improving the game’s competitive depth. Players now have separate meters for attack and defense, encouraging players to use both tools instead of saving meter for one or another. Fatal Blows only activate when you’re low on health, making them a great comeback mechanic. And if you miss they actually recharge, making whiffs way less anticlimactic. There’s even a parry mechanic for tight blocking. Characters customization combines aspects from both Mortal Kombat X and Injustice 2. Players can create moveset loadouts for each character, choosing between presets or modifying from scratch. They can also adjust characters’ gear and costumes. You can make a blue Scorpion which sounds illegal. We even saw the prologue for the game’s story mode, the area where this franchise absolutely dominates the competition. Raiden is still corrupted and will maybe get some comeuppance for his time travel shenanigans from “Kronika, The Keeper of Time and creator of existence.” Other characters will also meet their counterparts from across time. Speedster Kabal was teased so maybe the DC influence will create a kind of Flashpoint event for the Mortal Kombat universe? We won’t have to wait much longer to find out though. Mortal Kombat 11 (with a very nifty blade logo design making an unwieldy number like “11” somehow look cool) launches on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on April 23. The online beta starts March 28. For more on Mortal Kombat check out our gift guide and digital book on the history of fighting games.last_img
