Photo by Tristan Tamayo/ INQUIRER.netFor Jonathan Uyloan playing somewhere else is better than not playing at all. With Meralco set to put him in the reserve list, the sharpshooting guard made the bold decision and asked the management to allow him to play for Cignal HD in the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup.ADVERTISEMENT But more than anything, what the Fil-Am guard treasures more is the chance to be with this group of guys, a mix of veteran campaigners and aspiring amateurs, all seeking to make it to the PBA.“It was great, being around with guys who are hungry to get better in basketball and are trying to make it to the PBA. I’m happy to help out and show that it all starts with integrity and hardwork first. And it all paid off,” he said. With this short stint now over, Uyloan is positive that he has made a good account of himself as he returns to the Bolts.“I just hope that they see that wherever I’m at, I’ll work hard. With Rain or Shine, I was able to win a championship for the first time. And then, when I was with GlobalPort, that team went to the semifinals for the first time. With Meralco, we made it to the Finals for the first time. Then here in Cignal, we became back-to-back champions. Every team I’ve been on, it’s been a blessing,” he said.“I don’t know what it is. But I just know that where I come from, it’s all hard work and you got to show it in every team you go. Every part of the team is valuable and whatever they bring individually, collectively, it’s going to be great.”ADVERTISEMENT WATCH: Streetboys show off slick dance moves in Vhong Navarro’s wedding “I asked Meralco if I could play with Cignal and everything worked out well. Some people may think it’s a demotion, but for me, it’s a blessing. I have a contract with Meralco and I have a contract with Cignal. I was pretty much working two jobs,” he said.Turns out, it was the right move with Uyloan going as far as citing this stint with the Hawkeyes as one of the best decisions he’s ever made.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutout“It was probably the best move of my career. It made me love basketball more,” he said. “I came from the PBL before, and I was a practice player for Rain or Shine. The move helped me go back to where I came from. I wasn’t the superstar, I had to work my way up, so going back to Cignal rejuvenated my basketball career.”Suiting up in time for the playoffs, Uyloan averaged 8.0 points on a 39 percent shooting from threes, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists as he became a valuable contributor for Cignal’s back-to-back title wins in the developmental ranks. Andrew Wiggins led Minnesota with 26 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 18.Aldridge had one of his most complete games with the Spurs, two days after signing a three-year, $72 million extension. He shot 9 for 21 from the field and had four assists. He was limited to five attempts in the first quarter as the Spurs did not go out of their way to get the ball to their 6-foot-11 forward, but instead let him ease into the contest.ADVERTISEMENT “I’m just going to play and whatever happens, happens,” Aldridge said. “I’m more comfortable for sure. Playing more confident. Hopefully that translates to us being better out there.”Aldridge’s running dunk on a bounce pass from Manu Ginobili gave the Spurs a 100-92 lead with 1:42 remaining.“They deserved a lot of credit for executing down the stretch against a very talented, well-coached team,” Popovich said.Ginobili finished nine points and four assists, including a 3-pointer within a minute of entering the game midway through the first quarter. I’ve been getting so many text messages that motivate me to keep going. It just reminds me of what I’ve been through these last couple of months.”Gay’s opening basket was an emphatic dunk with a minute remaining in the first quarter.MURRAY MOVING ALONGMurray, in his second year out of Washington, had two assists and two turnovers while shooting 7 for 8 from the field in 25 minutes.“He’s playing with much better composure, much more control of the game and directing the team,” Spurs center Pau Gasol said. “But he’s also taking advantage of his athleticism and opportunities.”NO EXCUSES Fire hits houses in Mandaluyong City Aldridge had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and San Antonio held on for a 107-99 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night while playing without leading scorer Kawhi Leonard.“He just didn’t feel comfortable and it’s 98.75 percent on me,” Popovich said of Aldridge’s struggles. “I tried to change him, I tried to make him a different player and I think that really affected his ability to feel comfortable and confident on the court. Olympic athletics: Liu Xiang’s Olympic jinx strikes again

By on

first_imgTragedy struck Chinese superstar Liu Xiang once again as his London Olympics campaign ended in tragic fashion as he crashed his left foot into the first hurdle in the 110m event and had to be taken away for medical treatment.Even though the 2004 Athens Olympics champion, who is worshipped back home in China was not a 100 per cent fit, the focus was on him on Tuesday.Wearing the 1356 bib number, the same as in Beijing, where he had to leave the arena without competing properly because of an injury, Liu Xiang had been in focus.Having come to London weeks in advance before the track and field events, Liu Xiang then moved to Germany for training due to the cold weather. His heavily strapped achilles caught the eye today but none expected that disaster would strike him in the first heat as she drove his lead foot into the hurdle. The champion fell in pain and as a result hurt his right ankle. As he was taken away from the end of the track in a wheelchair, Chinese fans sobbed. “We were hoping that the fourth anniversary of the Beijing Olympics would be special. It began on August 8, 2008, but this has been so sad for us,” said a Chinese student at the Olympic Park.Athletics has become so popular in China after Liu Xiang’s golden effort in 2004, he now has a huge fan base.Yet, to be done in by bad luck two times in a row at the Olympics is something nobody wishes for any athlete.advertisement”It must be hard for that to happen for the second time in a row. He’s a great athlete,” said Usain Bolt, who was competing in the 200m heats.”One of the most amazing things is that he came back. He switched legs and started leading with a different leg. He’s a true champion. It’s so sad for him,” added Bolt. After the Beijing Games, Liu Xiang needed surgery and came back strongly. Though he did skip a few events now and then including the London Dimanond League in July 2012 because of a back problem, Liu Xiang has been followed very closely. When he was training away from the media glare indoors, people speculated if he was a 100 per cent fit.Yet, for sheer nostalgia, the champion’s run in the heats was awaited today,”I regard him as the best hurdler in history and I have so much respect for him,” said Andy Turner, the winner of Liu’s heat.”It was horrible to see him limp off like that so I had to go and help him,” added Turner.Balazs Baji of Hungary, who was alongside Liu in Lane 3 when Liu fell, waited for him near the finish as he hobbled up the track. When they met, Baji raised Liu’s arm like a boxing champion.”I’m so sorry for him,” Baji said.Liu Xiang is considered such a supreme technician in the high hurdles as he barely brushes the barriers during a race.Whether it was nerves, or his achilles or sheer bad luck, the trauma which Liu Xiang suffered on Tuesday morning made for sad viewing.last_img read more
